Traditional Swiss paradise
In the heart of Switzerland there's a small, unspoiled village called Kandersteg. Enjoy the snow and sunny slopes and walk through the cuckoo-clock-like village. The ski area is rather small but a pleasure for the eye.

The 6 ski lifts (t-bars) gives you access to 11 different runs of easy and intermediate level of difficulty. Nordic skiing is much bigger here than the downhill and the total distance of trails in Kandersteg and surroundings are 72 km.
Children are well taken care of in this resort. During the Swiss school holidays the Tourist office organizes a children's ski center. Some of the hotels also have babysitting on request and unsupervised playrooms.
Wet and muddy caving
When you're not skiing there's plenty to do in Kandersteg. Set in a beautiful mountain landscape you will surely enjoy hiking along the mountain streams or mountain biking over the hills. A probable new experience is caving - explore the Mamilchöhle that is a 233-m passage into the mountain.
Go on a floodlit sledge run or try curling and skating at the indoor skating rink.

Natural skiing
Kandersteg is most famous for its cross-country trails. A network of trails surrounds the village and there's a cable car that will take you to more snow-sure trails in Oeschinensee and Sunnübel.
The downhill ski area is divided into two sections, Oeschinensee and Sunnübel. There is 10 km of gentle runs - best for intermediate skiers and beginners. There's only one black piste so if you're after the hard stuff you might want to go somewhere else.
Skischool
Skiing lessons can be arranged through the local scout center or the Tourist office that can get you a local guide for group skiing.
Swiss atmosphere
If you've come to Kandersteg for the classical Swiss village you've seen in all the brochures you've come to the right place. The hotels are full of character and several of them are graded with four stars. The town used to be a spa before it became a skiing base, so the hotels have a tradition of taking care of people. The Hotel Schweizerhof was Kandersteg's first grand hotel and has 30 rooms in Art Nouveau style with an elegant lounge with a huge open fire.
Kandersteg is situated 65 km south of Bern and easily reached by car or rail. Go by plane to Zürich, the nearest airport. From Zürich, take the train to Kandersteg.
