A winter resort that just gets better
Gstaad is a charming little town in Switzerland's Alps. It has mostly been famous as a good summer resort, but now more and more people discover the great winter activities here. What people remember of this resort when they leave are pretty slopes, lively nightlife and lots of fun. Gstaad is also known to be rather expensive and this is one of the favorite resorts for royalties and movie stars.

Lively nightlife The nightlife is excellent, either you are of the wild kind or a more laid back type of person. Numerous restaurants, piano bars and discos can be found in the valley. If you're just searching for a place to eat you should stay in town where it's very nice and charming and the food is great.
Good variety, snow and modern lifts The ski area is shared with the Austrian village Ischgl and it's really vast. 200 kilometers of slopes of all difficulties will keep you busy for very long. Especially intermediate skiers will surely be satisfied. Experts, on the other hand, might find some of the black slopes a little easy, but you will find some great off piste instead.
The ski school has got a really easy slope where your children can learn skiing, and not far from that there is a run which is just a little more difficult, excellent for further training. Unfortunately it might be few real good slopes for beginners, though.
The snow is great during the whole season. The problem is that when the weather is bad, Samnaun's and Ischgl's ski area still has got a good snow cover, and that brings bus-loads of skiers from lower resorts and causes queues. The modern lifts are built to prevent those bottlenecks, and Samnaun has got Switzerland's first two-story cable railway.
Snowboarders should find the area very interesting because of the new snow park that has been built. It is the biggest in Europe and is constructed with a new difficulty-setting system to suit everyone. If you're an expert you'll go for the I-skill. The II, III and IV skills are for the intermediate and the V-skill is very easy and suited for the beginner.
Quality costs The hotels in Gstaad are of such good standards that normal customers might find most of them a little expensive. But don't worry, there are other, cheaper hotels and guesthouses spread throughout the valley.
The closest international airport is in Geneva, 150 kilometers away. Transfer between Geneva and Gstaad takes about 2.5 hours. Gstaad has it own railway station.
