The central locality in the Boviko region is the village of Bovec. It lies on a height of 483 m above sea level and is situated 140 km from Ljubljana, 72 km from Nova Gorica and 17 km from the Italian border. Towering above Bovec is the mighty Kanin range, where Slovenia's only high alpine ski center is located. It's thick coat of snow enables skiing until the end of May, sometimes even longer.
A gondola cableway lifts skiers to the.ski pistes, which extend from a height of 1600 to 2300 m above sea level. Three chairlifts and a skilift operate in the area. The Prestreljenik Restaurant offers quality catering services.
There is also a cross-country ski run in the direct vicinity. Excellent entertainment is provided by a discotheque, club Elvis, an entertainment hall in the Alp Hotel, cinema, billiard club, a cultural center and several restaurants. In Bovec and the entire Soèa valley, already well-known as a destination for active tourists, there is a wide choice of alternative possibilities during the winter, ranging from pleasant walks and cycling in the valley to more exciting snow rafting. Regular paragliding "trips" are organised from Kanin down to the valley. Another exquisite experience is night sledging down the Alpine Mangart road. The side valleys and the areas at the feet of the high peaks are all a paradise for fans of frozen waterfall climbing. Cross-country skiing fans can enjoy over 60 km of arranged tracks in Bovec and nearby Tarvisio. One of the special features of Bovec is the possibility of skiing in three countries on the skiing grounds in Sella Nevea (25 km) and Tarvisio (30 km) in Italy and in Arnoldstein (45 km) in Austria. Visitors can also use their weekly ski-passes for Kanin at these three resorts. This triple border area is a candidate for the Winter Olympic Games in 2006.
