If you want to develop your skiing skills, either cross-country or downhill, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. Whether you are a beginner, or love the thrill of the steepest slopes, you will find something to suit your preferences in the Lillehammer area. One of the biggest advantages with the area as a winter sports resort is that you know there will be snow here, no matter how free of snow the winter may have been elsewhere. Marvellous skiing terrain and good, cold winters are the stuff of successful winter holidays. The Lillehammer mountains with Nordseter and Sjusjøen are among northern Europe's best cross-country skiing resorts and situated about 850 metres above sea level and 15-20 kilometre from town centre. Sjusjøen and Nordseter offer a varied selection of overnight accommodations, including hotels, mountain inns, cabin resorts, holiday apartments, youth hostels and caracan centres. The area can offer approx. 300 kilometres of skiing and direct trails between Lillehammer, and the Olympic trails at the Birkebeineren Skiing Stadium and the Hafjell alpine area just 15km north of Lillehammer, and if you are a beginner on the downhill slopes, Sjusjøen and Nordseter might be a good place to start before you visit the Olympic slopes of Hafjell.
Opportunities to activate your children.
For your youngsters there are carefully designed nurseries which will entertain and teach them how to ski while you're on the slopes. Many hotels have also a special play area and offer to serve an early evening meal when necessary. Norway is an excellent choice for families.
So much to do, so little time
During your time off the slopes you can visit the cultural highlights in the area, including the special open-air museum at Maighaugen, the Fairy Tale at Hunderfossen Park and the Lillehammer Art Museum. But if you're in for something more thrilling, you can try the bobsleigh run with speeds up to 130 km per hour! An interesting alternative is to experience both the bobsleigh run and the Olympic downhill course in an advanced technological simulator which is very realistic.
There are also possibilities to take part in dog sledding, sleigh rides and ice fishing.
Enjoy yourself in the city of Lillehammer.
There are many choices at hand when you are searching for evening activities. These range between simple bars to discos and restaurants.
