The skiing is very primitive and the lifts used are rope tows that will bring you up the mountain and a vertical drop of about 500 meters. This area is REALLY NOT for beginner but perfect for intermediates that wish to improve their skills as well as experts that are out for an adventure. The accommodation is to be found very close to the mountain. This resort is really primitive but also not too far from the bigger city of Christchurch (100 km).
There are various ski tours offered beyond the patrolled area. You can for example make quick trips into Alans Basin and Broken River.
The bar has a happy hour from 5.30 - 6.30 every night
There are no prepared runs offered in Craigieburn because everything is pure off piste! This area is definitely not a good place to start skiing in but strong intermediate and expert skiers are in for a great adventure. There are three lifts of primitive standard that brings you up on the top of the mountain and a vertical drop of 500- 600 meters. You will experience plenty of perfect powder and a lot of varying skiing. Don't worry about having to stand in any lines to the lifts and you'll also have plenty of space coming down the slopes. The ski area is huge and the place is usually uncrowded.
The Main lodge is a self catered place very close to the lifts and located in the beautiful native forest. Easily reached on skis at the end of the day.
For more privacy you should try the Matuhi Lodge with five double rooms but just as close to the lifts.
Craigieburn is located about 90 minutes from Christchurch and there is a shuttle service provided so you rather easily can reach the resort.
