Winter sport and fun in the snow
Germany's most southerly community has always been rated among the top venues for skiers, snow boarders, cross-country skiers and hikers. However, the Allgau people have specifically prepared themselves for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships to take place in February 2005, a fact which is of particular benefit to the guests. Moreover, the 11,000 soul community is unbeaten concerning its history, culinary delights and landscape. And, the Oberstdorf people have not neglected any of the three heights, that is to say, the valley, panorama heights and high mountains.

It all started quite modestly. In 1897, people used to go skiing by strapping sealskins under the boards and climbed up the mountains. And, when in 1888, the first train with tourists ran in, associations like uniqueness and pure nature were not remote. In 1952, the first starting shot for the Four Hills Tournament was fired and guests from all over the world brought international flair to the "Nordic center of the Alps" as Marc Hodler, honorary president of the FIS, described the town. Ever since that time, the best ski-jumpers of the world go on a tour through the four winter sport venues Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen to compete in a unique contest and Oberstdorf has traditionally - how else can it be - been the kick-off venue. In 1987, the Nordic World Ski Championships followed suit which will take place here again.
First laurels by order of health were reaped when Oberstdorf was awarded the attribute "Climatic Health Resort" 68 years ago (the seal of approval "Premium Class" in 2002), and the most southerly and sunniest spot of land in Germany was selected Kneipp cure health resort in 1964. Evidently, a variety of sanatoriums, convalescent homes, sport and physiotherapists and breathing pedagogues have settled here. The department for Esthetic Surgery at the Oberstdorf hospital enjoys a worldwide reputation for its excellence.
In addition to these references: 200 km of hiking tracks, 75 km of cross-country skiing tracks, 30 ski lifts on the Fellhorn, Nebelhorn and Söllereck as well as 44 km of Alpine ski-runs, of which 30 km are prepared by artificial snow and are the icing on the cake of this sporting venue.
What hardly anybody knows: you are able to excellently ski in deep snow off the ski-runs in Oberstdorf. Skiers enjoy pure skiing pleasure between 815 and 2,224 meters from the middle of December to the beginning of May. And, on average, the sun shines on 300 days in Oberstdorf - a German record.
