If you're ready for a somewhat different skiing experience with lot's of untouched snow, hardly any queues and a quiet and genuine village - Sainte-Foy is the place to go! The ski area has been developed only since 1990, built by a couple of farmers who wanted to make better money off their land. The three chair-lifts are rising from 1550m to 2620m and offers vast mountainsides of undiscovered powder if the conditions are good.
Sainte-Foy has something for every level of skiing, although it's known for the magic off-piste routes and the open spaces.
The village is set quite far below the ski-area and has one hotel, Hotel Monal. Other possibilities are to stay in Bourg-St- Maurice or in one of the bigger resorts such as Val d'Isère, Tignes or Les Arcs.
Exploring the mountainside If you find the ski pistes to be not challenging enough you should try ski touring with an experienced guide. If you want exercise at lower altitude there are 8 km prepared cross-country trails at Planay-dessus. In the summer Sainte-Foy and it's surroundings offers rafting, climbing, fishing, hiking in the beautiful green mountains.
Atmosphere in front of the log fire Being such a newly developed resort as Sainte-Foy is, there are but a few restaurants and only two bars. At the top of the first chair are two restaurants located, converted from old barns and serving good food to reasonable prices. For after-ski the most likely place is a bar-restaurant in a ruin close to the ticket office. For more entertainment or dancing, Val d'Isère is a short taxi trip away.
Few lifts, enormous spaces The snow reliability is good on the north-facing slopes but poorer on the west. If you're used to the big resorts where the powder gets tracked before noon, Sainte-Foy will give you untracked snow all day with plenty of variations. The rumour is that Sainte-Foy is the place where the Val d'Isère ski instructors go on their days off, probably for the uncrowded slopes and the non-existing queues.
The ski area spreads over the mountainside on both sides of the three chairlifts. The two black slopes, in the upper part of the area are a challenge to the advanced skiers. If you want more tough skiing it's easy to get a guide for the unlimited off-piste skiing. For the intermediate skier there are 1000m of vertical red slopes, try the Aiguille run, from the top to Plan Bois. There's a small draglift near the base station for the beginners or you can take the first chairlift to Plan Bois and cruise down a nice tree run, which is the only green run offered.
The skipasses are fairly cheap and Les Arcs will give you a reduction on a day pass when you show them your pass from Sainte-Foy.
Skischool The Ecole du Ski Francais offers individual or group instructions for all levels. They also give snowboarding classes and even teach you how to look good in the deep powder. You should take the opportunity and sign up for a day or two because the classes are never known to be full.
If you want to put your kids in ski school, you can do so from the age of four. There is also a "club enfants" where your kids can play under supervision when you hit the slopes.
There are only a few hotels in the village of Sainte-Foy, but finding rooms in chalets, hostels and even at a farm or a house nearby shouldn't be too hard. You'll find a wider range of choices in Bourg-St-Maurice and there are buses going from there to the ski area. The most common thing to do is to stay in one of the bigger resorts nearby and do day trips by car.
Sainte-Foy is a ski area in the Tarantaise, close to Les Arcs and Val d'Isère. It's set 8 km from the road between Val d'Isère and Bourg-St-Maurice. Going by car from Lyon the easiest way is to take the A43 to Albertville. After Albertville, take the express way to Moûtiers then N90 to Bourg-St-Maurice. Go towards Tignes and Val d'Isère for about 20 km.
By train there are connections from Paris or Lyon, by plane you can go to Chambéry, Lyon-Satelas or Geneva.
