Bourg-St-Maurice is a genuine French town below the ski resort of Les Arcs. Take the train up to the ski area where only pedestrians are allowed. After a long day of skiing - go see the local market, museums, arts and crafts and end the evening with a typical Savoyard fondue.
The advantage of living in Bourg is that it's cheap and you can easily get to other ski resorts like La Plagne which is included in the Les Arcs ski pass.
Les Arcs is known for its snow reliability which is good because most of the skiing is above 2000m and several of the slopes are north facing. The area is well planned and made so there's a possibility for everyone to find one's degree of difficulty at the top of every lift.
A kid resort Bring your youngest toddler and he will be taken cared of! In Les Arcs/Bourg-St-Maurice you can leave children as young as 4 months in the kindergarten. When they've reached the age of 3 they can join a ski school and the skiing is free for children under 7. Worth mentioning is that the International ski school at Arc 1800 works with a maximum group size of six for children aged 4 and 5.
Sports and culture
The Baroque church is worth a visit and so are the museums and the Craftsmen's Guild. If you haven't tried the locally made Beaufort cheese, go try it at the dairy co-operative.
Easy accessed skiing There's no skiing in Bourg-St-Maurice but all the skiing you could possibly want in Les Arcs. The ski area is very well planned and varied. It consists of three villages, Arc 1600, Arc 1800 and Arc 2000.
One of the longest continuing pistes in the Alps goes from the top of Aiguille rouge to the little Le Pré. A run that everyone should try!
For advanced skiers there are challenges both on and off-piste. The best moguls can be found in the Comberciere piste and the off-piste can be found if you walk a bit. Untouched snow and nice tree-runs are the awards.
Intermediate and beginners will have plenty to do. Most main routes have easy and more difficult alternatives so all levels of skiing will enjoy the run. Arc 1800 is best for complete beginners with sunny, spacious slopes where you can learn at your own pace.
2000 beds Staying in Bourg-St-Maurice is a good choice for both families and youth. It's cheaper than the surrounding resorts and has got several nice hotels and chalets. There is also a camping site that is open all winter with a camper bus area and plenty of facilities. The Bourg-St-Maurice shuttle goes nearby, free of charge.
