Primavera
Spring is at the door: high temperatures and longer days. Down in the valleys the
first fowers grow up, and at the same time it is still possible to ski in the mountains.
It is the season of the spring snow also called “firn”, perfect for off pist skiers
and for randonnee, if you get up early in the morning. The cold at night and the
sun of the day transform the surface of the snow and make it more smooth and secure.
Choose your slopes according to your capability, but never follow the slopes of
others: they are not always worth to trust!
Avoid too steep descents or too icy in the first hours of the morning and have a
look at the many rocks coming out on the surface. Never take your skis off in the
most steep and icy parties: your boots are less reliable than your skis. If necessary,
go down on your side with the skis on your feet. Everyone can explore this fantastic
world away from the prepared pists, even your children, if you choose amusing and
risk free itineraries. This time of the year it is very important to be aware of
the strong sun, use sun proctection in your lotions and in your sun glasses. Do
not forget to rehidrate your body and dress in a way that don’t make you sweat too
much. The quality of the snow changes very fast for the effect of the strong sunshine,
a safe slope in the first hours of the morning can become very dangerous in the
afternoon. As a general rule you should not trust the snow when it is heavy, and
do not ski in the late afternoon. Avalanches are very heavy and they can involve
all the different levels of snow fallen during the winter.
For your personal security you should always use ARVA, shovel and transceiver,
together with a lot of common sense to judge the extremely fast changes from time
to time. Rely on the pro of the mountain, the guides, to be able to explore in all
security the most interesting valleys of the Alps. Day tours or several days tours,
spending the night in one of many open refuges. Have fun.
